The
Commission judges that the property known as the Old Charlotte National Bank Building does
possess special significance in terms of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The Commission bases its
judgment on the following considerations: 1) the Old Charlotte National Bank Building,
constructed in 1918-19, was designed by Alfred Charles Bossom, an architect of regional
importance who operated out of New York City; 2) the Old Charlotte National Bank Building is
an especially fine local example of the Neoclassical style of architecture; 3) the Old Charlotte
National Bank Building has served as a banking facility from its inception and is, therefore, the
oldest building in Charlotte-Mecklenburg which has been used continuously as a bank; 4) the
first president of Charlotte National Bank was B. D. Heath, a leading New South industrialist
and entrepreneur in this region.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library system is asking for the community’s input as it begins the planning process for a brand-new Sugar Creek Library.
The current branch, which shares space with CMPD’s North Tryon Division, will be replaced by a much larger standalone facility near the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center.
Library officials say this new location will better serve the growing needs of the neighborhood. The project is part of a broader series of capital improvements funded by Mecklenburg County in 2022.
It follows in the footsteps of the newly opened University City and Pineville libraries and the Main Library currently under construction in Uptown.
Much like those facilities, the future Sugar Creek Library aims to be more than just a place to check out books.
Plans include space for studying, private meetings, community events, and children’s activities — all designed to foster learning, connection, and creativity.

ImaginOn was designed by Gantt Huberman Architects and Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture, and is owned by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.
I was last at Lunchbox Records in Charlotte in 2017. It made a fantastic impression on me then. As first the pandemic conspired to keep me out of record shops for several years, and then the degeneration of the shops we have locally just ended up making me angry if I tried to shop in them, the thought had been swirling around my skull that maybe Lunchbox Records was still all of that and more? Maybe I should take a trip over there one day?
Once an early 20th century industrial complex that manufactured Ford Model Ts and missiles, Camp North End is being redeveloped into a hub for innovation and creativity in Charlotte. S9 Architecture devised the master plan and adaptive reuse campaign for the 76-acre mixed-use site, creating a unified campus designed to encourage collaboration and community. This phased development by ATCO, in partnership with Shorenstein Properties will feature 1.8 million sf of large- and small-scale creative office space and retail, as well as light industrial and event space, with potential for future residential and hospitality use.
